When the trailer for EA’s Battlefront 2 came out, I was stoked. But I decided to wait for it to come out in 2017 before even thinking about buying it because you never know how good a game will be before it’s released.
That is why I don’t usually pre-order games because you have a chance of losing money you never wanted to spend in the first place, then you are stuck with a game you didn’t even want.
I am glad that I waited because I did some research when it finally came out to see what other players were saying and I even looked at some of the game-play.
I wasn’t a fan of the grindy progression system, micro transaction loot boxes, and some other things as well. So I decided not to buy it, until 2019.
Wow a lot of things have changed, including the price tag! So is Star Wars Battlefront 2 worth buying now? Well… For the most part yes, but I still have some mixed feelings about it.
Lack of Freedom
Freedom, is one of the important aspects that I feel is missing from Battlefront 2. You know what I liked about the original 2005 edition of Star Wars Battlefront?
The ability to get in random vehicles on the battle field or even steal the other teams vehicles. I don’t like the fact that in the new Battlefront 2 that you earn a vehicle and just spawn in one.
It was way more fun in the original game to just steal other peoples vehicles, or even use your own. Another thing that bothers me is space battles.
All you do is spawn in a ship and start shooting other ships. I was a huge fan of the 2005 Battlefront 2 space battles because you had so much freedom.
You spawned in a hanger that you could actually walk in (WOW) and choose to get in whatever ship you wanted, it was all a first come first serve kind of thing.
And you weren’t bound to being stuck in a spawned spaceship flying through space shooting at ships; you could choose to do whatever you wanted to do.
Perhaps your shield generator was destroyed and you didn’t feel like using vehicles, so you repaired the shield generator instead, while your other team-mates worked on sneaking into the other players space station or even brawling other players in spaceships.
This is why space battles were so epic in the 2005 edition of Star Wars Battlefront 2.
- There were different parts of your base that could get destroyed (e.g. shields, bridges, frigates, communications arrays, sensors relays, and life support systems).
- you could defend those parts or even go out destroying those parts of the enemies bases.
- you could repair your shield generator.
- You could sneak into enemies bases, landing in their hangar and fighting other players while destroying the whole ship from the inside out.
- Or maybe if you didn’t want to do any of that you could go out in space and dogfight
- You could cooperate with some ships and have your friends hop in the ship with you.
- Some ships could even be landed in the enemies based and be used as a spawn point until the enemy destroyed the ship that landed in their base.
When I played the new Battlefront 2, I was shocked when I was on Kamino for the first time in single-player arcade because I couldn’t even go all the way outside like I could in the original Battlefront 2.
At first, I felt like some of the boundaries were really odd in Kamino and I was a bit disappointed when I played that particular mode because as a new player you think it’s possible to go in certain areas, but then you can’t.
But that was only in that particular game mode. When I played Capital Supremacy on Kamino it made up for it because the boundaries felt more natural there, which made me feel a whole lot better about the whole boundaries situation. So the boundaries weren’t so bad after all.
Okay, but the only better thing I saw was the graphics. The graphics are really beautiful, the graphics almost lured me into buying the game when it first game out in 2017, but I’m glad I waited until 2019 to buy Battlefront 2.
I don’t have a problem with the graphics at all because they are all good. I don’t mind skins either, it’s nice to be able to change the appearance of a character.
Thanks For Fixing Some Things & Adding More Content
Although there are some things I currently don’t like about the new Battlefront 2, I’m glad they fixed the micro transactions and loot boxes. It isn’t as grindy to unlock things anymore, and you can choose to buy crystals if you want to instantly unlock different characters skins.
I’m also happy to see that they are planning on adding more free maps, new characters, and modes too.
I’m really looking forward to the Felucia map coming and the playable Droidekas and hope that one day this game gets a galactic conquest mode too just like the original because that would be another big plus.
I really like the direction EA and DICE went with the Capital Supremacy update because you can capture command posts just like in the original game.
Is It Really Worth It?
For the price Star Wars Battlefront 2 is currently at, I think it’s worth getting. It’s only $30 on Origin for the PC, but sometimes it goes on sale and only costs $4.49. In fact, it’s on sale right now for that very price as I was writing this post.
But unfortunately it’s only the PC edition that is on sale right now for all you PlayStation only users. But the PlayStation edition is about $25 and sometimes goes on sale too, but it requires a PS Plus Membership to play online.
But on the PC it can be difficult to join a game without waiting a really long time because most of the players are usually on the PS4. Xbox One usually has the second most players and PC has the least amount of players.
It could really use more players if you really want to get the best of the game.
You know, I just hope that one day they will add some more freedom in space and ground battles too. Or even add a separate mode for players that want to play the classic modes in the beautiful graphics offered within the game.
As a 2005 edition Star Wars Battlefront 2 veteran where you could ride in vehicles as you pleased and hitch a ride on Tauntaun in hoth, it was disappointing when I saw a Eopie in Tatooine for the new Battlefront 2 because as a noobie to the game I went up to this wonderful creature to see if I could ride it, but unfortunately I couldn’t.
Anyways, I think that Battlefront 2 would be so much better if they made those changes and I would love it so much more.
Some of you reading my concerns as of now might think I’m crazy, even after all the fixes and updates they made to the game.
If I had to give the game a personal rating I would give it a 4/5, which isn’t too bad.
I just want you to know I’m not saying it’s a bad game, it’s good, but I think it could be better and that’s just my stance on the game for now. It could definitely use more players. Most of the players probably got disinterested from the way the game was handled at the start, but I think I’m surprised to see that EA and DICE actually fixing things and giving players more of what they want now.
Hopefully more players will continue to return because of all the updates and fixes Star Wars Battlefront 2 is getting.
